  Because these companies have zero track record of making compelling mobile devices. ASUS is debatable, but their non-Nexus Android tablets have sold terribly.
  
  He's saying that design wins from mobile players like Samsung, et al, would be more interesting.

  Intel has not realized that only traditional PC OEMs will buy Bay Trail, other manufacturers do not want the old Intel dominance but inexpensive (or even expensive, it does not matter !!) ARM socs just to be free from the old Big Devil. Intel needs to change its way to think and it needs to realize that its long term destiny is like a Big Foundry......with some production of its own cpus obviously.

  It is *far* too early to count Intel out of the smartphone/tablet SoC market. They spent years ignoring it, and in the short time since they started paying attention, Intel's products have *significantly* closed the gap on ARM in terms of both performance and power consumption.

  Companies don't make decisions like this. Intel doesn't have any good design wins because their products don't (yet) hit the price/power envelope you have to have in mobile. I think Airmont will be a Big Deal (tm) in this space, though.

  Well yes and no. Apple makes decisions like that. Samsung prefers their own cpu's as well. Sure they use Intel where it makes sense, but so long as there isn't a significant difference they will use their own chips. Intel needs to make sure there is a significant difference. I don't think they succeeded on the android side of things yet, but definitely on the windows side this will be an excellent choice.

  Is it really that hard to put bay trail into a 7" device?
  
  7" bay trail with 1920x1200 resolution IPS or PLS screen with 6hrs or more battery run time.
  That would be the ultimate mobile computer right there.

  $199 nexus 7 should be way cheaper and much more useful.
