In podcast 2 (41min) Brian commented he wants to see high dpi

The tradeoff with high dpi is you have less desktop area which is especially critical for mobile devices.

High DPI is nice but do people really want to scroll more, on a TINY device than a larger low dpi device such as a laptop ? (for some content such as websites)

Anand relays this concept at 43mins.

Put an infinity transformer side by side with a 1280x800 laptop showing the same webpage and judge for yourself with real content.. I did. I wasnt very happy.

Great for 'apps' but real universal content...

I think qualilty isnt that critical on a tiny portable device despite arguments about viewing distance but we are getting to a point where our large desktop displays have larger canvases but lower ppi/dpi.

The mass market just comment on if a screen is clear (bright/contrasty/viewing angles) rather than any detailed icons or dpi

What do you all [the anandtech community] feel about this direction.

If a Transformer next to a (presumably Windows) laptop is the basis of your judgement, then unfortunately you haven't seen a good HiDPI setup in action. What you should do is look at Apple devices like the iPad 3, iPhone 4, or rMBP that implement a proper HiDPI screen and software stack.

If it's done right, you don't see any of those issues you ran into. The ultimate purpose of HiDPI isn't to make things smaller, but rather to make things clearer. That means running "legacy" applications with pixel doubling (to bring them up to the right size) while drawing fonts in greater clarity at their native resolution, while native applications will know how many pixels to use to target their desired size right off the bat.

Any chance for a video version of the 'cast in the future?
I'm sure some other listeners would like to see your handsome face while listening, Anand.

If you only want to see Anand, perhaps... the rest of us are scattered around the country/world.

I second this. Bring everyone in with video conferencing software.

the demand for 2560x1440 korean monitors isn't driven by a sudden demand for 'quality' or IPS or anything else, just a pure demand for resolution.

After years of no affordable options beyond 1920x1080, there was a huge pent-up demand from those who demanded more but couldn't spend $1000 on a higher res monitor.

These come in and help fill in that massive hole between 1920x1080 consumer monitors and higher resolution professional monitors.

I've never been that into Podcasts (even with tech related ones, they'd simply reiterate stuff you hear everywhere), but I've always loved Anandtech. So this is the first Podcast I'll really listen to. It's a pleasure.

Any chance of getting this in the Zune Marketplace? I'd love to subscribe to this podcast on my Windows Phone.
  • Springfield45 - Tuesday, August 28, 2012 - link

I second the motion. Spiv and I may be the only people in the world, however, that use Zune.....

I liked this one better than the first one, really.

Loved the fact that the 1440p korean monitors got some spotlight as well. IMO they are the single hottest thing to have hit the PC landscape this year.

I would have loved to hear your thoughts on why PC monitors aren't getting any sort of high ppi treatment. Even though the technology has been here for a long time now, we still see same old 1080p monitors. I guess that "race to the worst" statement does have some weight to it.

Quad core A15s at 2 Ghz in a smartphone would be a complete overkill for today's platforms as well. It would be amazing to see them chomp through apps. :D

I think it's a yield issue. This is why high dpi is going from small to big, There's a reason it started out with phones, then the iPad, then 15" laptop. At least we're relatively close to 24"+ screens.

    Hey guys,

I love the website! But, I was wondering if you could add your podcast to stitcher radio? Here's the link if your interested: http://www.stitcher.com/contentProviders.php

I haven't listened yet to this episode, but I really enjoyed the first one, and I was looking forward to this one - mostly to your thoughts on the SOC marketplace. My only suggestion is do NOT stick to a weekly schedule - it'll require you to put a lot of filler content into it. There are enough weekly tech podcast on the market - mostly boring. I can see the reasons why you'd like to make it a weekly event, but I'd personally like Anandtech to put out a monthly or so podcast.
  • iamkyle - Tuesday, August 28, 2012 - link

    2nd'ed.

PLEASE don't stick to a weekly "be all, end all" schedule. If you have content or some interesting things to discuss, please by all means! If not, not a big deal. I'm pretty sure I speak for most Anandtech readers/listeners here when I say that we trust your insights and commentary & understand that it takes time to assemble such commentary.

Great feedback - as always, we're not big on filler content. We won't make any exceptions for the podcast either. This is still a new format for us and it's a great way of getting out tons of information/discussion that we just don't have the time to write so I don't see a near term limit to our ability to crank out one a week. The big issue will be what happens around long tradeshows like IDF, CES, etc... I like the idea of doing one remotely but that's not always possible with meeting schedules and such.

    Take care,
    Anand

Any good recommendation for sellers on ebay from people who've purchased them?
  • mvMcfly - Tuesday, August 28, 2012 - link

Great podcast guys. This is what I love about Anandtech, an exhaustive and super deep look at subjects that I love. I'll keep listing as long as you keep producing these.

Am I the only one waiting for an external GPU over Thunderbolt? I get that storage is a good consumer of all that bandwidth, but so is the GPU. The desire to have a strong GPU is the piece keeping me from using a thin-and-light laptop as my primary system.
  • evenglow - Wednesday, August 29, 2012 - link

I agree with others that it doesn't have to be a weekly thing though I don't mind a little filler as I listen during work to keep things less boring. I wouldn't even mind if it had reviews already on the site. I've listened to another podcast where they go off on really stupid tangents. It's ok if it's interesting but not so much if it's just talking about the weather. I guess a good description would help people know to waste their time or not. You might lose some listeners for that cast but that's better than losing them for every cast due to lack of content.

Thanks, can't wait to listen to the first one and many more.

I have a 2012 MBA. Can I drive a Korean monitor with a DVI coming out of thunderbolt/MDP.
  • cosmotic - Thursday, August 30, 2012 - link

But you guys using the word "right" in what I feel is a condescending way 151 times is driving men nuts! The consistently awesome articles don't use the word this way. You should listen to the podcast yourselves and hear what I'm talking about!

    Looking forward to more podcasts!

Love the podcast. My only complaint is that the volume on both episodes so far has been extremely low (MP3 version). Listening in my car required turning up the stereo volume to almost the maximum. Any chance on future remixes of getting the volume turned up a bit?
