Why do all reviewers refer to the front camera, as "the selfie camera"?

I never take selfies, but I use my camera all the time to video call my kid. Not being able to take selfies I wouldn't miss one bit, but no video calls? That would be a deal breaker to me.

    Are all reviewers single?
  • Xex360 - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

Can't agree more. People are becoming increasingly narcissistic these days.
  • heffeque - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

You people complain about the darndest things.

"Selfie camera" is easily understandable and shorter than "video call camera", and "front" camera can sometimes lead to confusion: Is it the camera pointing to the front, or is it the one on the front pointing back? (yes, people do confuse the front and back terminology).

Calling it "selfie camera" isn't the end of the world. Please be adults about it.
  • imaheadcase - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

Um when has anyone ever got confused with "front" of a camera on a phone. lol

The irony with what you say is "selfie camera" is literally something a adult would not say, and tell us to be adults about it. I've never talking with people about phones referred to it as that.

Calling it a selfie camera is like a average person calling every phone a iphone.
  • serpretetsky - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

It's not clear to me which one is the front camera. Selfie camera is very obvious to me. I do not take selfies.
  • chaos215bar2 - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

If we're really going to be pedantic about it, isn't a video call using the front camera, strictly speaking, a live selfie? (Unless you're holding your phone up to someone else's face, of course.)
  • littlebitstrouds - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

"Everyone's so narcissistic... now let me explain why we can't use cultural words and should conform to what I like!"
  • Spunjji - Friday, April 26, 2019 - link

    C-c-c-c-combo breaker!

Seriously though, great point. Bollocks to prescriptivists!
  • escksu - Thursday, April 25, 2019 - link

Plenty of them uses the word selfie camera, esp. older generation who gone through nokia phones.
  • Ian Cutress - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

Being around new phone launches and people are slowly referring to it that way. Some people find front/rear camera a bit confusing.

Also, happily married for seven years :)
  • nathanddrews - Thursday, April 25, 2019 - link

Congrats! The couples that selfie together stay together. LOL
  • melgross - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

You may be a rare exception, but those front facing cameras were put there specifically to take pictures or videos of the person holding the phone. Andctherefor, simcecthese are of yourself, they’re shortened to “selfie” cameras.

It doesn’t matter whether you doing videos or pics of your family or not.
  • melgross - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

Boy, that was a lot of errors to creep up in such a short post. I swear I didn’t see them.
  • imaheadcase - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

Oh so all the commercials and stuff I see with phones of them using both cameras to film video and stuff was just blooper reel i guess.
  • MamiyaOtaru - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

and during your video calls, what's the camera pointing at? Your*self* no?
  • Myrandex - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

And lol what does being single have to do with using the term selfie, my wife and I send each other cute selfies all the time, and often take them together, esp showing off hair or makeup looks, it isn't a problem let people live and enjoy life.
  • escksu - Thursday, April 25, 2019 - link

Lol......I guess you are still very young and never gone through the days when people uses a tiny mirror on the phone to take a selfie.

Thats why front cameras were later incorporated into a phone to allow people to take selfies easily. Thats why many refer it as selfie camera.
  • T2k - Thursday, April 25, 2019 - link

Where does it say it cannot be used for video??
  • Gunbuster - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

Sorry that camera is too goofy looking. Might as well play the daddy shark song at full volume when deploying. Solid no for me.
  • Opencg - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

wow a phone that you can firmly grip on the side. somebody tell samsung about this.
  • jeffpower - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

I may have missed it in the article, but does it have a 3.5 mm audio jack?
  • jeffpower - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

Searching, GSM Arena says no, it does not.
  • boredsysadmin - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

Reno 855 with zoom does not (booo), but Reno w/o Zoom with 710 does have it, according to GSM
  • melgross - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

I guarantee that every phone with a pop-up camera will have that camera jam either in the up position, the down position, or somewhere in between. Eventually, if you keep these in your pocket, whether in a case or not, because the slots have to be open, dirt will get inside. It’s going to happen.
  • flyingpants265 - Thursday, April 25, 2019 - link

Yeah, then you can just repair it for $50 like anything else on your phone.
  • melgross - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

So here’s something I’m ticked off at right now. I’ve got this small pop-up of a video Ad from advertisers on this site on my screen, and there appears to be no way to dismiss it.

I don’t know where else to complain about it, so I’m doing it here.
  • imaheadcase - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

motorized pop-up camera screams "first thing before battery to fail". Also being from China, with custom android, with Chinese laws passed recently requiring all hardware to let them snoop..i would be very concerned buying anything directly made in China like a phone now.
  • beggerking@yahoo.com - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

you don't read do you? it clearly states it has passed 200000 drop tests and the reviewer confirmed that it has function to detect a drop which will auto collapse the camera.
  • chaos215bar2 - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

What kind of drop test do you suppose a phone / camera can go through 200,000 of and still work? Alternately, how many fold tests do you suppose the Samsung Galaxy Fold passed before being sent to reviewers?
  • Death666Angel - Thursday, April 25, 2019 - link

And you think Samsung didn't test the Fold a lot as well? In the wild, things work a bit differently than in the lab. A moveable front facing camera is another thing that is likely to break in a phone, the hinge and motor being the most sensitive ones. I personally will avoid motorized ff cameras for the foreseeable future unless the phone is a fantastic deal otherwise.
  • beggerking@yahoo.com - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

this will be my next phone. awesomeness all around!
  • flyingpants265 - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

Welp, this looks like the one to get... OnePlus 7 has weird tapered edges on the screen, Vivo Nex is asymmetrical (not that it matters much), and I think the other Chinese phones don't have a warranty outside of China. The fingerprint sensor could move upwards a bit, though..

Now I just need speakers. Front speakers. So I can hear what I'm doing. I don't care if it makes the phone 2mm thicker, just put speakers in. Speakers. And wireless charging. Maybe a bit pointless, but it's kinda nice.
  • flyingpants265 - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

The article says "For western markets", no word on price, but there's a bunch of the 710 versions on ebay for 600-700 USD. That's a damn good price, considering current iPhone and Samsung pricing..
  • 0iron - Thursday, April 25, 2019 - link

Price is in live blog article
    Reno - €499
    Reno 10x - €799
    Reno 5G - €899
  • flyingpants265 - Thursday, April 25, 2019 - link

    Not too bad, I guess.
  • Spunjji - Friday, April 26, 2019 - link

What's this about the OnePlus 7 screen? I wasn't aware that we had final images of it yet.
  • peevee - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

Sorry, but you review a phone like an iPod Touch.

What about connectivity? Would it support tMobile's 600 and 700MHz bands? 801.11ax? What are the speeds? What is the quality of calls?
  • Ian Cutress - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

This isn't a review, it's a hands on. I've had the unit 12 hours, eight of which I was asleep for.
  • Spunjji - Friday, April 26, 2019 - link

I'd wager that you were more awake during those 6 hours than this individual was while writing their comment...
  • nunya112 - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

Oppo are really taking it to samsung and apple. for $300Australian (215-ish US) ive got a powerful AX5 appo qualconn 8 core 14nm 4gb ram/ 64gb space + 250gb+ storage 6inch screen 4G+ DUAL SIM !YES!
samsung cant compete at that price
  • MarcusMo - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

Aesthetically, I don’t like how the curvature of the top corners of the display are elliptical rather than round. It is unpleasant as it doesn’t harmonize with the body’s contour.
  • nunya112 - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

Mate it's a phone. Not a beautiful woman
  • Spunjji - Friday, April 26, 2019 - link

Women are people, phones aren't - they're designed objects. Your reply is weird.
  • Gunbuster - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

Gonna have to hold off for the Reno 911 Dangle edition phone. Oppo can we get that in 2020?
  • akyp - Wednesday, April 24, 2019 - link

First manufacturer to have the 'courage' to ditch the front cam on a flagship device will get my money.
  • s.yu - Thursday, April 25, 2019 - link

ZTE has a model with a back screen to substitute the front camera, if you want to you don't ever have to use the back screen(or maybe even remove it).
  • 0iron - Thursday, April 25, 2019 - link

"The device will automatically close the slice if it detects the phone is being dropped – something we confirmed by throwing it up in the air and letting it land on a bed."

Would love to see that in action
  • s.yu - Thursday, April 25, 2019 - link

The terminology confuses me. Last time I checked the 10x factor starts from the UWA on this unit, but IIRC this UWA unit is a 16mm equiv.? In which case the optical telephoto of 6x(less than I expected from the initial leak of a slide w/o all the numbers, BTW. I thought the optical to "hybrid" was only x1.4) only goes to 96mm equiv? Is there still a need for a periscope design at that FoV?
BTW even that 6x optical looks waxy, as if shot through a dirty window then had strong NR applied.
  • s.yu - Thursday, April 25, 2019 - link

Ian, I think you made a mistake. I read the GSMA hands on and saw what I expected, the optical telephoto is 130mm equiv. so both 6x and 10x are "hybrid". The "optical" would be ~8x counting from the UWA however GSMA claims "5x" here counting from the main module. I'm not sure how it is in the actual interface though.
  • s.yu - Thursday, April 25, 2019 - link

Oh I missed a line there, the interface switches from "10x" to "wide", so 1x is indeed the main, and so the leaks were wrong.
  • mrhdesh3 - Saturday, April 27, 2019 - link

Wow. This looks like DSLR camera. Excited to buy one soon.
  • justareader - Saturday, May 4, 2019 - link

Looks like a good cheap mid-ranger.
