Form over function. All show and no go. - Those are the first things that pop into my mind after seeing the bottom drawer performance and high power consumption. We now have reached the point where there's a component that burns more electrical energy feeding pointless LEDs than it does actually fulfilling its duties as a component in a computer. Here's to enthusiasts and gamers! Good going people. You've really made the world a better place by making LEDs on everything marketable.

Most make me an old fogey, but I totally agree. I'm not sure why any gamer or enthusiast would even buy this thing, do the flashing lights actually make up for the reduced performance - considering it's supposedly 'performance' these people are after. Perhaps this may be the jump the shark moment for RGB on everything - it's now gone so far that is actually affects the performance of the peripheral the lights are supposed to be 'enhancing'.

No, lighting is very important to a segment of that market. Lit DRAM, feet, strings of LEDs and neon inside, and out. Replacing the cover with a clear plastic one(violating the FCC protocols), is very important to them.

Stupid cases such as the ones from Alienware, and others, show what these in the gaming community want. Not all of them are like that, but a big enough percentage are, and it’s a VERY big market. They get over 100,000 people to some of the ComicCons around the country.

The difference being, this one actually reduces performance. At least with most anything else up til now, it was just added cost and some increased power consumption, but the LEDs on the RAM don;t make the actual chips hotter, or the LEDs controllers on the mobo don't make the VR modules or chipset run hotter and throttle. I could probably run a lot of LEDs and still use less power than my system was when it had a GTX480, which I replaced with a GTX970. But that's just power draw, even if my system wasn't half buried in a stand under my printer next to my desk, gaudy case lighting wouldn't cause my CPU or GPU to throttle. This thing - this is just all-around fail. I guess this does not apply to the serious performance nut - the ones who swear they can tell the difference between 1MHz differences in clock speeds to the CPU or RAM, because they probably wouldn't be running SATA SSDs anyway, but this is just beyond insane, reducing performance and increasing cost for the sake of a bunch of flashing lights. I have a bridge to sell the people that go for this, too. Oh wait, I better add lots of LED lights to it first.

RAM runs hot as it is. Adding LEDs doesn’t help. Does it damage performance? I don’t know.
  • qlum - Tuesday, September 25, 2018 - link

DDR4 doesn't run that hot and adding leds on the edge of the memory sticks doesn't impact the temperature of the ram much. Heat from the top of the sticks is pretty easy to dissipate. Besides that this sdd uses way too much leds and blocks most of their light.

The telling point is that you can use this without the data storage functionality (and excess cables) getting in the way of its true purpose, which is to light the way to the Promised Land
  • TitanX - Tuesday, September 25, 2018 - link

indeed..i want not a single light on my PC except for the HDD activity and power indicator. no glass..no view panels..just an inconspicuous black box.
  • MrSpadge - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

At least the naming is adequate: it makes you hyper furious while waiting for your data and wondering about your electricity bill!
  • TitanX - Tuesday, September 25, 2018 - link

dude..its 2 watts...dont think that makes more than a nickel a year on the ole bill..
  • Amandtec - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

Samsung sneakily dropped prices on the 860 EVO's to make them the cheapest SSD's with a dram cache on the market (per pcpartpicker, at least).
  • MrSpadge - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

The MX500 is still cheaper in Germany, but not by a lot.
  • Death666Angel - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

Especially the M.2 SATA versions. Not contest there, really.
  • Impulses - Tuesday, September 25, 2018 - link

SanDisk Ultra is also cheaper, at least at 2TB & SATA... I've got three Samsung drives in my desktop right now (256GB SM951 & 2x 1TB 850 EVOs) but the next one will likely be a 2TB Crucial/WD based on pricing alone.
  • DanNeely - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

So, if I understand this correctly, the only forms of chemotherapy for the RGB cancer in this drive are to buy a mobo that is also suffering from RGB cancer so I can plug into it and use it's software to disable the lights, or to use a sata power cable that has been modified to disconnect the 12V rail?
  • melgross - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

No, you just don’t buy gamer oriented goods. Pretty simple.
  • mjz_5 - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

Find me a high end AMD motherboard without LEDs?
  • 29a - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

Just don't turn them on. I'd rather have it and not need it than not have it and want it.
  • eddman - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

That statement only applies to useful tools, like a wrench, or a hammer, or a knife, etc. These LEDs have ZERO functional use, except for producing light pollution and being an eyesore.
  • melgross - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

Well, they all have LEDs, the question is whether they’re diagnostic LEDs, or there for decoration. I don’t follow every mono out there (or most of them, thuthfully) so I don’t know what they all have.
  • TitanX - Tuesday, September 25, 2018 - link

i have an asus x470 prime..it has a turn off lights thing in the bios.
  • mr_tawan - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

I'm looking for a new SSD for my laptop. This might be a good fit ...

Oh wait, my laptop has no glass panel.
  • Lolimaster - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

Blame your laptop manufacturer for not making the mobo pcb and you keyboard clear :D
  • dcole001 - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

All Flash and I recommend to Pass!! Just go with the Samsung 860 Series SSD Drive and you will have the best SSD Drive you can get for Desktops.
  • jabbadap - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

Or crucial mx500, at least it's cheaper than samsung where I live.
  • Lolimaster - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

On amazon the difference is about $10-20. EVO's got twice the endurance.

But MX500 got hardware powerloss protection (physical capacitors).
  • TitanX - Tuesday, September 25, 2018 - link

man, unless you are doing enterprise workloads or 4k video edit, that whole endurance thing on 500gb+ SSDs is a moot point now. i had a 5 year old Mushkin Chronos deluxe 240GB SSD as a primary drive and only wrote 37 TB in that time. i have a 1TB crucial M2 now and its endurance is multiples of that..i'll replace with with the next big thing or whatever long before it konks out on endurance.
  • casperes1996 - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

I really don't get the RGB thing... It really isn't even pleasant to look at, and in a lot of cases you lock it away in a non-see-through case anyway. I'd much rather just have a sleek and simple design like the old Cheese Grater Mac Pro than pay extra for flashing lights on everything. I'm willing to pay extra for a great, simple design. But not for lights that ruin the aesthetic. Red lights would disturb my peripheral vision. Keyboard backlighting I can get behind since that serves a good purpose and can look good in the dark when the purpose is there. RGB on GPUs, SSDs, RAM etc. I don't understand.
  • seamonkey79 - Tuesday, September 25, 2018 - link

I'm not huge on RGB, but it's kind of funny that you would mention buying a Mac of any type, which is going to cost more than anything (I've seen) that uses RGB in the Wintel world (for the same hardware).
  • rpmurray - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

I'm waiting for them to include a radio receiver so that the lights can pulse to the beat of your favorite FM station.
  • Dragonstongue - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

what a stupid mofo drive design...have to use a 4 pin 12v power instead of just allowing the drive to use the power that it is given etc etc..

Bravo Kingston, you get a reward for one of the dumbest moves to join the RGB disco light show craze and fail miserably at it.
  • olafgarten - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

It's so stupid when they put LEDs on everything.

My Strix GTX980 has a white Led that can't be disabled and stays on even when the computer is shut down, I had to cover it up with tape as it was disturbing my sleep!
  • PeachNCream - Tuesday, September 25, 2018 - link

Strix-branded products are stupid anyway. They are part of that immature gamer-in-the-basement segment of the PC market. That doesn't justify the stupid LEDs, of course. Does your PSU have a physical switch it? You could use that or turn off power at the surge suppressor to shut the LED lights off without bothering with tape. Flipping the physical switch is a good idea anyway to reduce vampire draw from active devices to marginally reduce your electrical power bill while also cutting back on the risk of losing hardware to spikes caused by thunderstorms.
  • MadAd - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

woohoo, all i need now is some LED cables, an LED optical drive and some LED thermal paste and im all set!!
  • MrSpadge - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

    > LED optical drive

Nope, you really want that light source to be a laser!
  • mobutu - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

    yuck
  • ranran - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

So, this is like those people that buy the little Civic's or Corolla's and then pump tons of money into crazy wheels, air foils, noisy exhaust, and speaker systems that together probably cost more than the car is worth........... totally useless...
  • Lolimaster - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

Over 22cents per GB when better SSD's from Crucial and Samsung are jumping around 16cents per GB :D
  • zodiacfml - Monday, September 24, 2018 - link

Thanks for the useful title, I don't have to read the review. I clicked on your ads though
  • qlum - Tuesday, September 25, 2018 - link

I feel for the poor guy who is inevitably going to put this in his laptop.
  • Billy Tallis - Tuesday, September 25, 2018 - link

Did I mention that it also weighs 4 times what a normal SATA SSD weighs?
  • qlum - Tuesday, September 25, 2018 - link

    Yikes,
At least it's ticker so it probably won't fit
  • eastcoast_pete - Tuesday, September 25, 2018 - link

So, this Kingston Fury thing has lot's of LED bling that is not only useless, but negatively affects performance of the SSD, never mind the crazy price point - I guess Kingston moved officially from ridiculous to ludicrous on this one.
I wonder if Kingston's marketing folks have estimated the damage this RGB turd of an SSD will do to their overall reputation as a serious player in the memory and parts world. Going forward, I will think more than once about buying RAM, drives or USB sticks from Kingston, as that company seems to be more about appearance than performance.

This thing flat out fails at post on a dell poweredge. I have 4 of them. have to reseat them when the os is running to make it work again

any solutions? i've tried removing the rgb header tho it still warms but i don't have encountered problems with system freezing yet.
