In a small CES preview, Corsair have emailed us about one of their internal design projects they will be showcasing this year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.  Corsair is calling this the MX RGB Project: 100% mechanical key switches with per-key color backlighting, giving the user full control of 16.8 million color resolution.

This is a collaboration between Corsair and Cherry Corp., a technical showcase based on a Vengeance K70 keyboard and new Cherry MX RGB switches.  The aim is to get a similar product on the shelves in the second half of 2014 in the fast Cherry MX Red, the light tactile Cherry MX Brown, or tactile and audible Cherry MX Blue.

Corsair wants feedback on ideas like this: I for one could see it useful for lighting up different keys that have different functions in different games.  If it can detect when I am playing Battlefield 4 vs. Borderlands 2 or Grand Theft Auto, then I cannot wait to see it in the flesh.  Expect it to be available sometime after Computex, when I am sure we will see a near-final version.

Just noticed that the numbers in the top row aren't lit up, only the symbols above them (just like my K70). I hope they can sort that out as the numbers are, most of the time, more important then the symbols... Sounds small but it's weird seeing the symbols with no numbers....

With respect to the Cherry switches, they all have springs. They aren't of the buckling variety...

When are they going to sell it ?!?!?! Very nice!

There will be a large market for this in a tenkeyless format, but they probably already know that.

The only other things I'd suggest is to please maintain standard ANSI key layout! Having unique key arrangements is something manufacturers try to differentiate on, but it make the board's use very specific.

I LOVE this idea, not for any functional reason but simply because it is pretty, unique, and customizable. I use two K70's currently, silver for the office, black/red for home gaming, but I would have bought one of these if they had been on sale. I think there is potential in this product that will only be discovered when released into the hands of the creative public. Oh, and design a software keyboard configuration option so people can share their configurations.
    Thanks! You make great products.

Corsair: Please make the K95-style (18 dedicated G-keys) with the MX-RGB and the Cherry Blue switches.

I have a K90 and two K95's. The K95 is amazing (which is why I bought two). Add MX Blue switches, and I will buy 3 on launch day. If you can keep it below $200 per keyboard, I'll buy 4.

I hope you are still watching these comments! This announcement makes me itch for some MX Blue action :D

What would be even nicer is if you could find this keyboard anywhere to buy it.
