    Rubbish!

I just want to know how much money they burned on this dreck.

Those prices are rather high and I'm personally not sold on the awkward looking case design. HP would have been better served installing some higher end hardware in one of their nice looking business mini-tower cases to save some money on the chassis design rather than adding engineering costs. As it stands, that box is absurd looking.

As absurd as it is, I very well know they really only do it for gullible consumers whom buy based on aesthetics alone. Someone, somewhere out there, really adores the way this case looks and has the money to buy it, and will buy it. That's how they make their money back.

They're not making it off smarter consumers like you or I, they're making business of gullible ones, and more power to them for going after suckers, I guess.

It would look really sharp in my VR room, but I have better things to spend my money on.

Yes - those higher end "Z" workstation cases are incredibly well built. The "X" box looks like it would take up too much space and literally not fix anywhere in a normal office or living room.

Z440 chassis is pretty much sexiest OEM case available if you ask me. If I were custom building something it'd probably be from Silverstone. Both are utilitarian and minimalistic.

You're not the target audience. The target audience is people who don't want to build their own computer, and have a lot of money to spend.

Also, HP has a whole line of less expensive gaming towers that have more reasonable prices and fairly conventional cases.

Actually, based on those criteria, I am the target audience. I just don't think there's any value or benefit in owning such an impractical container. It lacks style, grace, and would not fit in well with the decor of my home.

Considering it comes with two $700 video cards and a chambered case, I don't think $1800 is that high of a price.

And personally I like how it looks. I'd rather have eccentric and interesting than boring.

The article's coverage on pricing doesn't leave one with the impression they're getting two graphics adapters for the base $1800 price.
  • extide - Monday, August 22, 2016 - link

$1800 is the base config, the config with dual cards are going to be more expensive.

Example on how to make the pc housing unnecessarily occupy the most possible space.

I have an HP Blackbird (upgraded many times) and I like both the design and the functionality of the case. I was disappointed at the way HP bought Voodoo and then did almost nothing with it.

The Omen X looks interesting, but I'm not sure whether that design would be better or worse than a standard tower. One thing I dislike about all towers is the way they make upgrading everything from GPU cards to CPU coolers to memory sticks a total pain unless you turn it on its side (which typically involves disconnecting a lot of cables from the back).

I owned one of the original IBM PCs, and I remember how the horizontal design made much more sense in terms of plugging components into the motherboard. Nowdays, the only horizontal cases seem to be HTPC-oriented and tend to emphasize compactness and quietness over expandability and maximum cooling potential.

I'd like to see someone come out with a high-end horizontal case made for gaming performance rather than just living room friendliness...

It's sexy, but the awkward position of the chassis turns me a bit off.
  • vivekvs1992 - Sunday, August 28, 2016 - link

well...hp has never been that good at pricing their gaming PCs..but this is too big too, that too for a micro atx set up, its going to take up space of a mid tower or more..but..baby steps..maybe the next one will be better
