Motorola has produced a lot of phones in the last several months that iterate the same hardware platform. While this is typical of a manufacturer (just look at the sheer number of Galaxy S variants available still today), the rate at which devices within a line have been EOL'd and reiterated have been a bit surprising. So, having released the Droid 3 less than six months ago, we now have the Droid 4.

Droid 4/Droid RAZR SunSpider 0.9.1 Results

The earlier Droid was based on the TI OMAP 4 clocked at 1 GHz and ran Motorola's non-Blur skin over Gingerbread. With the Droid RAZR, this platform was updated to 1.2 GHz and brought some performance optimizations to their software package. The Droid 4 was announced with the same hardware and software platforms as the RAZR, and after a little hands-on time we can confirm that performance matches the RAZR almost exactly. This isn't terribly surprising, but if you are a Droid-ophile still clutching your Droid 2 Global waiting for a worthy successor, your wait may be over. The Droid 4 brings LTE, dual-core performance and a QWERTY keyboard in a package that bests the Droid 3 for thinness at a surprising 8.99 mm. Of course, you could just wait a few more months for the Droid 5.

I'm still interested in this phone due to it being a global LTE phone with a physical keyboard and choice is always good since there's no one-size-fits-all type of phone.

Would rather just wait two weeks for the RAZR maxx and get the big battery. Especially on LTE

Wait until early March when the RAZR2 comes out. Or late March when the white RAZR2 comes out. Or Early April for the RAZR2 MAXX comes out.

    Ha! I love humor.
I know my next upgrade is December 2012. I will look at what is available at that time. But I have spent some time with razr and I love it. (/end Subjective)

LOL. Just give it up. Keeping up with smart phones is the worst possibility in all of tech. PC upgrade gaps to stay current seem like eons compared to today's smartphones. It doesn't matter what you buy for $200-$300+ with a contract: it will be "outdated" in a matter of months. At least PC CPUs and GPUs can still be in contention with the latest games a couple years down the road.

Do like I do and buy all my phones just when they are about to be EOL'd. I got OG Droids for my wife and I when there was a special at 2 for $99 no long before the droid 2 came out. We have been using them ever since with my wife on the stock Verizon Roms and me rooted, overclocked and running Cyanogen - and perfectly happy with them.

Last week I upgraded to a Droid 3 for $50 and today I ordered an upgrade for my wife at....wait for it....$0. Yes, thats right a free Droid 3 with contract renewal and Wirefly even thew in a free charging stand and car dock.

So if my luck holds, about 2 years from now I'll be buying a Droid 6 for $50.

PC's improvements are definitely moving slower now and it seems like this cycle happens every 7 to 10 years. A new platform will get 90% of the innovation efforts and change the fastest. This decade are phones and tablets. Last decade was laptops rampping up to the power of a desktop. Previous decade was the desktop ramping up to mainframe power. Roughly.

So give it 7-10 years and phones will stabilize with nearly all the power of a laptop/desktop. Then someone will invent an innovative wrist watch, cram a full PC into a single chip and the whole rapid upgrade cycle will start all over again.

All those who were hoping that Egypt would open its stock market today, as had been indicated previously by the Egyptian Central Bank, will be disappointed. Not only will the CASE not open today, but it will remain shut on Monday and Tuesday as well. The reason: the Thermidor reaction at local banks is starting.
